Does Insurance Cover Bariatric Surgery?

Texas Center for Bariatrics & Advanced Surgery accepts most major health care insurance for bariatric surgery.

Insurance carriers are not required to cover bariatric surgery in Texas. Among those that do cover surgical weight loss, each one provides a different amount of coverage. Some will only cover certain types of weight loss surgery, and requirements vary from one provider to another. Before they will cover a procedure, most insurance companies also require meeting certain criteria such as a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or above, or a BMI of 35 or above with at least one obesity-related comorbidity, such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. Some require records of having taken part in a weight loss program under a doctor's supervision for a period of six months or longer before they will cover a procedure.

Understanding the requirements set forth by your insurance company is rarely simple, but the experienced staff at Texas Center for Bariatrics & Advanced Surgery in Plano, TX, is here to help.

We will be glad to speak to your provider on your behalf to determine exactly which weight loss procedures qualify for coverage, as well as the requirements. We can also help you maximize your weight loss surgery coverage.

I continue to be completely happy with the care, professionalism, support, and experience of Drs. Chen & Cribbins, and the whole team. They are supportive, respond quickly to calls & emails, and I feel I would not have had the success I have had on this journey without them. I cannot recommend this practice highly enough.

Financing Your Surgery

Care Credit

A Third-Party Lender That Can Help You
Afford Surgical Weight Loss

Whether you qualify for partial coverage of your bariatric surgery through your insurance provider, or you are planning to pay for surgical weight loss entirely out-of-pocket, Prosper and CareCredit® can make the financial obligation highly affordable.

These popular third-party lenders provide both low-interest and interest-free payment plans based on your credit score and other factors. Prosper and CareCredit has helped millions of Americans budget for medical care that would be otherwise unaffordable.

During a consultation, the staff at our Plano, TX, office can help you explore this option and determine if it is the best way to put the bariatric surgery you need within reach.

Using Tax Credits To Pay for Bariatric Surgery

If you don't qualify for insurance coverage of bariatric surgery such as gastric sleeve or gastric bypass, you may be able to write off a significant portion of bariatric surgery expenses on your annual tax return. This can apply to surgery for yourself, your spouse, or your dependents during a taxable year. These are the basic requirements:

  • The expenses were not offset by insurance coverage or any other source.
  • The expenses exceed 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income for the year.
  • You itemize deductions rather than taking the standard deduction.

If you work with a tax pro, get in touch with them to learn more about how this option can help make bariatric surgery affordable for yourself or a loved one.

I was very nervous about my appointment with Dr. Joe to discuss a possible revision to my gastric sleeve. I had a terrible experience with my previous bariatric surgeon and so I had my reservations about meeting with another one. When Dr. Joe walked in he was so cheerful and put me and ease immediately. He was so kind to me even though I was so embarrassed and ashamed to be asking for a revision surgery due to weight regain. He didn't make me feel guilty or put me down.  I'm so thankful for Dr. Joe and am looking forward to continuing to work with him and his team.
