Dr. Chen and Dr. Cribbins
Dr. Chen and Dr. Cribbins

Experienced, Board-Certified Surgeon

Dr. Joseph Cribbins is a highly renowned, board-certified bariatric surgeon of excellence proudly serving Dallas–Fort Worth. He has performed over 16,500 bariatric surgeries and has one of the lowest complication rates in the world. He works alongside another board-certified surgeon, Dr. Edmund Chen, to help an even greater number of patients.

Da Vinci Robotic System

We use the ultra minimally invasive Da Vinci Xi® robotic surgery system to reduce pain, minimize scarring, and promote faster healing. With this system, LAP-BAND surgery can usually be performed as an outpatient procedure in less than an hour, with most patients returning home the same day. It is backed by over 25 years of clinical evidence.

In-House Fluoroscopy for LAP-BAND Fills

Dr. Cribbins is one of the very few doctors in DFW with an in-house fluoroscopy machine (an imaging machine that shows a continuous X-ray image) for LAP-BAND fills and adjustments. You won’t have to go anywhere else for follow-up care, and each fill takes just minutes. We have performed over 10,000 gastric band fills over 25 years.

"I would not
go anywhere else."

Paying for Your LAP-BAND

LAP-BAND surgery is a major decision, and understanding the cost is part of that decision. Every case is priced individually because factors like your medical history, any comorbidities, and your insurance benefits change the picture. During your consultation at our Plano office, Dr. Cribbins and his team will review the details of your case and provide a custom quote.

We accept insurance, CareCredit® and Cherry financing, and Lantern to help you fit the cost of your care comfortably into your budget.

How Does LAP-BAND Surgery Work?

Over 1,000,000 people worldwide have chosen the Lap-Band Program. Lap-Band is the least invasive of the weight-loss surgeries.

An Adjustable Silicone Band

LAP-BAND is short for laparoscopic adjustable gastric band. The device itself is an inflatable silicone band. During the procedure, our bariatric surgeon in Plano, TX, places the gastric band around the top portion of the stomach, which helps reduce the size of the stomach. Food fills the upper stomach pouch and then proceeds to the rest of the stomach for normal digestion.

Restricting Calories

A smaller stomach pouch means you will feel full faster than usual. Reducing the sensation of hunger between meals can be an immense help in adopting a healthier diet. As a result, the gastric band reduces daily calorie consumption for safe, rapid loss of excess weight.

LAP-BAND Candidacy

LAP-BAND surgery is suitable for many individuals who are at least 18 years old. During your visit to our Plano bariatric surgeon's office, we will assess your health and eligibility for the procedure. Three key candidacy factors:

Body Mass Index (BMI)

To qualify for LAP-BAND surgery, you should have a BMI of 40 or greater. You may qualify for a LAP-BAND if you have a BMI of at least 35 and suffer from other conditions associated with obesity, such as diabetes.

Weight Loss Struggles

LAP-BAND patients have typically tried to lose weight multiple times in the past with only limited success. It's common for people to turn to bariatric surgery if diet and exercise alone have proven ineffective.

Commitment to Change

While the LAP-BAND itself is designed to provide a significant aid in losing weight, your own self-discipline regarding the foods you eat, the portions of those foods, and physical activity are equally important.

Initial Consultation

During your initial consultation at our office in Plano, Dr. Cribbins will discuss your health goals and assess your eligibility for LAP-BAND surgery. You can also discuss other bariatric surgery options so you can find a solution that's right for you.

General Anesthesia

The LAP-BAND procedure is performed with the patient under general anesthesia. We work to ensure your comfort before, during, and after the surgical process.

Laparoscopic Surgery Incisions

Three to five small incisions are made around the abdominal area so we can properly use the Da Vinci Xi surgical system. The high-resolution images and computer-guided surgical tools allow Dr. Cribbins to work precisely through these tiny incisions.

Placing the Band

The gastric band is placed through a small incision and carefully positioned around the upper portion of the stomach. With a smaller upper pouch created in the stomach, the LAP-BAND is sutured so that it remains in place.

The Injection Port

The LAP-BAND is attached to a small tube. This tube allows a doctor to inject a safe saline solution that expands and adjusts the band. The injection port for the band is positioned under the skin, usually near the belly button. Rest assured that the injection port is not visible to others when your midriff is exposed.

Life After LAP-BAND Surgery

The Post-Op Diet

In the first two weeks after LAP-BAND surgery, you will be on a liquid-only diet. In the third week after surgery, pureed foods can be eaten. In the fourth week, you can begin eating soft textured foods with no lumps. By weeks five and six, soft solid foods can be reintroduced into your diet, but they must be chewed thoroughly and savored.

Initial Weight Loss

In the first month or two after getting a LAP-BAND, you'll notice a dramatic reduction in your weight thanks to the post-op diet and reduced calorie consumption. The early rate of weight loss will slow down as your body adjusts to the changes in your dietary habits.

Long-Term Weight Loss

To achieve your long-term wellness goals after getting a LAP-BAND, you'll need to commit yourself to meaningful lifestyle changes. That means exercise, eating healthy, and other smart habits. It can be a lot of work, but Dr. Cribbins and his staff are here to lend our support.

LAP-BAND Fills

A LAP-BAND fill involves the injection of saline into the band. This adjusts the fit of the band and can improve the overall results of the weight loss surgery. During the first year, LAP-BAND patients may need three or more fills to find the right fit. After the first year, fills and adjustments are only needed about once or twice a year.

Dr. Cribbins, Dr. Chen, and nurse practitioner Mickey Patel will perform fills themselves. In fact, they have performed more than 10,000 gastric band fills in over 20 years. Our office has its own in-house fluoroscopy machine for fast and easy band adjustments.

Fills are affordable at $250 and patients from other surgeons are welcome.
