What Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
The gastric sleeve or vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) procedure is a type of bariatric surgery that involves the removal of a portion of the stomach through a small button hole incision. It is also the most common bariatric surgery around the world. Our bariatric surgeon in Plano, TX, can perform this procedure with the ultra-minimally invasive da Vinci® Xi surgical system. The stomach is separated into two sections, the smaller of which resembles the shape and size of a banana, leaving a small tube or "sleeve" remaining. After this area is sectioned off, the larger portion of the stomach is removed, leaving 15–20 percent remaining.
Removing 80 percent of the stomach significantly restricts caloric intake. In addition, the portion of the stomach that is removed secretes ghrelin and other "hunger hormones" that are responsible for appetite. By removing this part of the stomach, the patient's appetite is reduced further, significantly contributing to weight loss. This metabolic surgery also causes further changes in hormones that lead a patient to feel fuller faster.
The Next Level of Care
The Benefits of Our Advanced Technology
Dr. Cribbins, a recognized bariatric leader in Texas and the Dallas metroplex area, has been using the advanced da Vinci robot-assisted surgical system since 2012, making him exceptionally skilled at using this leading-edge technology. Some people may be concerned by the word "robotics" but don't be misled by the term. Your surgery won't be performed by a robot. It will be entirely controlled by the surgeon's skilled hand during your sleeve gastrectomy.
What the da Vinci robot does is extend your surgeon's abilities, giving him improved precision, dexterity, and control during surgery. In contrast, the surgeon's view and movement are much more limited in traditional laparoscopic surgery, which uses inferior 2D images and tools with a limited range of motion.
How da Vinci empowers your surgeon:

Increased Range of Motion
The da Vinci's robotic "wrists" have a greater range of motion than traditional laparoscopic equipment, to reach areas previously inaccessible with laparoscopic instruments. The da Vinci's 360° robotic arms and instruments extend beyond the limits of the human hand while enhancing precision and safety during surgery.

Ultra-Minimally Invasive
With four incisions typically less than 1/3 of an inch, Dr. Cribbins' minimally invasive bariatric surgery technique leaves fewer visible scars while also reducing the risk of infection. Smaller incisions typically allow for less time in the hospital, less pain, and a quicker return to daily life.

Enhanced Vision
Da Vinci has advanced vision technology that is greater than the capacity of the human eye. Its increased depth perception gives your surgeon a highly magnified 3DHD vision and true depth perception unavailable with traditional laparoscopic surgery techniques. It also has a wider field of vision than laparoscopic means.
Superior Stapling Technology
for Decreased Risk
/
Our surgeons utilize SureForm staplers developed by the leading medical technology company Intuitive. During your gastric sleeve procedure, this stapler constantly monitors tissue compression before and during firing, making over 1,000 measurements per second and conducting automatic adjustments for optimal precision. This ensures a safe, leak-free surgery.

A Closer Look at a Patient's Story
Kim's Gastric Sleeve Journey
We all know how difficult it can be to lose weight through diet and exercise. Our patient, Kim, is no stranger to counting calories, adopting strict exercise routines, and even hiring personal trainers. Still, the scale wouldn't budge.
Once she hit 275 lbs, this Plano mother could feel herself slipping away—she was no longer who she wanted to be for herself and her children. She knew it was time to consider bariatric surgery. She chose Dr. Cribbins for her gastric sleeve surgery because he truly understood her situation and didn't judge. He just wanted to help her move forward with a healthier life.
Just 10 months after her sleeve gastrectomy, Kim was down 112 lbs, going from a size 22 to a size 4/6. She now genuinely enjoys healthier foods, no longer has cravings to binge eat, and is proud to be able to teach her daughters how to have a healthy relationship with food.

Exploring Your Candidacy for Sleeve Gastrectomy
Unlike some other practices, our Plano bariatrics office does not put limits on patients. Everyone deserves a healthy weight and a long life—and that is exactly what weight loss surgery delivers. We are supportive and compassionate surgeons who do not judge. You could be a great candidate if you:
Are Between 14 and 75
Some patients worry they're too young or too old for surgery. Our surgeons, serving the Dallas metroplex from Plano, treat adolescents as young as 14 and patients up to 75 years old. We will find a weight loss solution that works for you regardless of your age.
Have Certain Medical Conditions
Weight-related medical conditions like obstructive sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and Type 2 diabetes can be alleviated with bariatric surgery. If you have a weight-related medical condition, you could be a great candidate for treatment.
Are in Good Overall Health
Aside from your weight, you should be in good overall health before receiving a gastric sleeve in Plano, TX. Though we use minimally invasive techniques, you will still have a healing period after surgery. Being in good overall health and not smoking will help you experience an easier recovery.
Have a BMI of 27 or Higher
Many patients fear they don't weigh enough to justify bariatric surgery, but if you have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 27 or greater, you most likely DO qualify.

How Fast Will I Lose Weight?
The First Couple of Months
Patients see rapid weight loss results in the first couple of months after surgery, and then it slows after the first year. Like gastric bypass or any other type of weight loss surgery, you will shed more pounds at the beginning of your journey.
Long-Term Results
Most patients can expect to lose 90 percent of their excess weight 12 months after gastric sleeve surgery. The rate at which you lose weight, as well as the amount you lose, depends on your diet, exercise level, and body. By staying committed to a healthy lifestyle, you can expect to see long-term results that promote weight loss and improve your health.
Why Choose Sleeve Gastrectomy Instead of Gastric Bypass?
Gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery are two of the most common bariatric surgeries. When compared to gastric bypass surgery, sleeve gastrectomy is generally considered a less invasive, lower-risk bariatric option. In addition, patients can undergo this procedure to improve their health, and then proceed with gastric bypass in the future if they don't meet their weight loss goals.
Our board-certified bariatric surgeons in Plano, TX, offer gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, and other bariatric procedures, so you can rest assured we will make recommendations on treatments that match your needs.
