Description
On the day of your procedure, you’ll arrive at one of the hospitals coordinating with Texas Center for Bariatrics & Advanced Surgery to be prepared and greeted by your surgeon and anesthesiologist. After surgery, you’ll be taken to a recovery room for time with your family and one-on-one care with a nurse. The next morning, you’ll be met again by your surgeon, your dietitian, and a bariatric care coordinator who will provide post-op instructions you can review before it’s time to head home the following day.

00:00:07.360 --> 00:00:10.380
Patients always ask what
happens on surgery day.
00:00:10.405 --> 00:00:13.720
After arrival to the hospital, you'll
check in at the registration desk.
00:00:13.745 --> 00:00:15.940
You get back to the pre-op area.
00:00:15.965 --> 00:00:20.900
Once there, get changed, get
your vitals, the IV goes in.
00:00:20.925 --> 00:00:25.140
There's some valium before all of
that, just to take the edge off.
00:00:25.165 --> 00:00:27.900
There's some preoperative
medications that are administered.
00:00:27.925 --> 00:00:32.660
You'll be seen by both your surgeon and
your anesthesiologist, and you and your
00:00:32.685 --> 00:00:36.900
family will get to meet the entire
operative team taking care of you.
00:00:36.925 --> 00:00:41.660
From that point, the patient really
doesn't remember very much of anything.
00:00:41.685 --> 00:00:45.900
They remember me talking to them in pre-op
area, and then they wake up either in
00:00:45.925 --> 00:00:50.700
recovery or even up on the floor,
doing great and relatively pain-free.
00:00:50.725 --> 00:00:55.860
After surgery, you move to recovery room,
where you relax there and the nurses take
00:00:55.885 --> 00:00:59.500
great care of you one-on-one to make sure
your nausea and your pain
00:00:59.525 --> 00:01:01.260
is controlled very well.
00:01:01.285 --> 00:01:04.900
Then move up to the floor where
your family is able to visit.
00:01:04.925 --> 00:01:10.180
By that time you're fully awake, you're
very comfortable walking the halls,
00:01:10.205 --> 00:01:12.380
starting your bariatric liquid diet.
00:01:12.405 --> 00:01:16.980
Once you leave the operating room, you'll
be in recovery, where one-on-one nursing
00:01:17.005 --> 00:01:21.540
care monitors your vitals, make sure that
your pain is controlled, and your nausea
00:01:21.565 --> 00:01:24.570
is controlled very well
before you head to the floor.
00:01:24.600 --> 00:01:27.850
Once on the floor, your
family members can visit.
00:01:27.880 --> 00:01:32.695
The nursing staff there will again
recheck, make sure your pain's well, make
00:01:32.720 --> 00:01:36.100
sure your nausea is under control, and
patients are welcome to have a family
00:01:36.125 --> 00:01:37.815
or friend spend the night with them.
00:01:37.840 --> 00:01:39.740
In the morning, your
surgeon will visit you.
00:01:39.765 --> 00:01:41.540
We have a discharge discussion.
00:01:41.565 --> 00:01:46.740
The dietician will see you, make sure
every diet question is answered,
00:01:46.765 --> 00:01:50.290
and post-op instructions are given
by the bariatric coordinator.
00:01:50.320 --> 00:01:53.895
By about 10:00 or 11:00 the next morning,
patients are doing great,
00:01:53.920 --> 00:01:54.840
ready to head on home.
