About LAP-BAND Surgery How Does It Work?

An Adjustable Silicone Band

LAP-BAND is short for laparoscopic adjustable gastric band. The device itself is an inflatable silicone band. During the procedure, the gastric band is placed around the top portion of the stomach, which helps reduce the size of the stomach. Food fills the upper stomach pouch and then proceeds to the rest of the stomach for normal digestion.

Restricting Calories

A smaller stomach pouch means you will feel full faster than usual. Reducing the sensation of hunger between meals can be an immense help in adopting a healthier diet. As a result, the gastric band reduces daily calorie consumption for safe, rapid loss of excess weight.

I have been coming here since 2006, when I had Dr, Cribbons do my lap band surgery. He is always in a great mood and Will always take time for you. Most surgeons have a horrible bedside manner, not Dr. Cribbons. His office staff is amazing, they truly like working with him and that says a lot about his practice.

The Benefits of LAP-BAND

Adjustable and Customizable

LAP-BAND surgery can be fully customized. If a patient is not losing enough weight, we can make adjustments in the office to alter the stomach size as needed. These adjustments can be made as long as the gastric band is in place, which means years of individualized care.

A Fully Reversible Weight Loss Surgery

Rather than removing or altering part of the digestive tract like gastric bypass surgery, the LAP-BAND procedure simply involves temporarily restricting part of the stomach. The gastric band can be removed with ease, and even revised into other bariatric surgery procedures if needed.

Long-Term Weight Loss Results

When combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise, a LAP-BAND yields dramatic results. Patients who struggled with being overweight  will be able to achieve a more ideal weight. Gastric banding also helps treat comorbidities such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea.

A Patient's Testimonial

"Thank you, Dr. Cribbins, for making my Christmas wish come true. For many years I have wanted to visit my family in California for Christmas, but I have not been able to do so because I did not fit in an airplane seat. I have lost 325 pounds thanks to having weight loss surgery with you. I was able to fly home this Christmas and see my family! Not only did I fit in an airplane seat, I fit in a coach seat. Thank you for the life-changing surgery! I can now go anywhere I want and not worry if I will fit in a seat on a plane, at the movies, in a restaurant, or ANYWHERE else. I have my life back, and I am loving my life again. Thank you, thank you, thank you!" James Kelly - 5 Star Google Review - 2020

Bariatric surgery doesn't just help with weight loss, diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea. After Alanna underwent gastric banding, she lost 120 pounds. But that wasn't all. The weight loss also helped address Alanna's infertility. Today she is the proud mother of a beautiful little girl.
LAP-BAND is an ultra minimally invasive Da Vinci surgery that is usually performed as an outpatient procedure in less than an hour, with most patients returning home the same day.

The LAP-BAND Procedure What to Expect

One Operation Can Change Your Life
One Operation Can Change Your Life

Initial Consultation

During your initial consultation at our office in Plano, Dr. Cribbins or Dr. Chen will discuss your health goals and assess your eligibility for LAP-BAND surgery. You can also discuss other bariatric surgery options so you can find a solution that's right for you.

General Anesthesia

The LAP-BAND procedure is performed with the patient under general anesthesia. We work to ensure your comfort before, during, and after the surgical process.

Laparoscopic Surgery Incisions

Three to five small incisions are made around the abdominal area so we can properly use the Da Vinci Xi surgical system. The high-resolution images and computer-guided surgical tools allow Drs. Cribbins & Chen work precisely through these tiny incisions.

Placing the Band

The gastric band is placed through a small incision, and carefully positioned around the upper portion of the stomach. With a smaller upper pouch created in the stomach, the LAP-BAND is sutured so that it remains in place.

The Injection Port

The LAP-BAND is attached to a small tube. This tube allows a doctor to inject a safe saline solution that expands and adjusts the band. The injection port for the band is positioned under the skin, usually near the belly button. Rest assured that the injection port is not visible to others when your midriff is exposed.

Life After LAP-BAND Surgery

1

The Post-Op Diet

In the first two weeks after LAP-BAND surgery, you will be on a liquid-only diet. In the third week after surgery, pureed foods can be eaten. In the fourth week, you can begin eating soft textured foods with no lumps. By weeks five and six, soft solid foods can be reintroduced into your diet, but they must be chewed thoroughly and savored.
2

Initial Weight Loss

In the first month or two after getting a LAP-BAND, you'll notice a dramatic reduction in your weight thanks to the post-op diet and reduced calorie consumption. The early rate of weight loss will slow down as your body adjusts to the changes in your dietary habits.
3

Long-Term Weight Loss

To achieve your long-term wellness goals after getting a LAP-BAND, you'll need to commit yourself to meaningful lifestyle changes. That means exercise, eating healthy, and other smart habits. It can be a lot of work, but Dr. Cribbins and his staff are here to lend our support.

LAP-BAND Fills Why Do I Need Them?

/

A LAP-BAND fill involves the injection of saline into the band. This adjusts the fit of the band and can improve the overall results of the weight loss surgery. During the first year, LAP-BAND patients may need three or more fills to find the right fit. After the first year, fills and adjustments are only needed about once or twice a year.

Full-Service LAP-BAND Aftercare  FILLS AND CHECKUPS BY EXPERIENCED DOCTORS

Fills are affordable at just $250 and patients from other surgeons are welcome.
