About LAP-BAND and Gastric Sleeve Surgery
It’s helpful to understand the difference between LAP-BAND surgery and gastric sleeve surgery when discussing the need for revision.
- LAP-BAND surgery: LAP-BAND surgery consists of laparoscopically placing an adjustable band around the top portion of the stomach. The band is inflated around the stomach to constrict the stomach, creating a small upper stomach pouch. The procedure helps the patient feel full on less food.
- Gastric sleeve surgery: Gastric sleeve surgery is performed by removing a portion of the stomach so that the remaining stomach resembles a tube or sleeve. By significantly decreasing the size of the stomach and removing the area of the stomach responsible for releasing hormones that trigger hunger, patients can more effectively lose weight.
Why Is LAP-BAND to Gastric Sleeve Revision Performed?
Some patients who have undergone LAP-BAND surgery may find that they need or want to have their LAP-BAND changed to gastric sleeve. The most common reasons that LAP-BAND to gastric sleeve revision is performed are:
- Complications related to the LAP-BAND: Some patients develop complications following the LAP-BAND procedure and need to have their LAP-BAND removed. Complications may include band slippage, port infection, and pouch dilation. As a result of complications, patients may experience abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and reflux.
- Weight loss is insufficient: Because the stomach stays intact after LAP-BAND surgery, patients may be more likely to overeat and so they may not lose their desired amount of weight and need a more effective weight loss surgery.
